5 Myths About Nutrition in the Elderly

1. Myth: If you don’t feel like eating, it’s OK to skip a meal.

Fact: Loss of appetite is a common complaint of many senior citizens but skipping meals is not okay as it invites many health problems. People tend to gorge on high-calorie, nutrient-poor snacks between meals. Skipping meals can also cause blood sugar levels to fall too low; then when you do eat a big meal, they can surge too high. It can also suppress appetite.

Advice: Always start your day with a healthy breakfast since appetite is usually best in the morning and make sure to eat something at every mealtime and at regular intervals.

2. Myth: Dividing meals in half and keeping leftovers is a great way to save money and time.

Fact: Storing leftovers may be budget-friendly but not a great option. Leftover food can go stale and as the sense of smell declines with age, seniors may not understand if food is spoiled. This can risk food poisoning.

Advice: Make sure to keep your kitchen clean, cook foods thoroughly, refrigerate leftovers as soon as possible and not consume food more than a day old.

3. Myth: Once you hit 65, it’s really too late to start following a healthy lifestyle.

Fact: It’s never too late to make healthy changes in your diet or lifestyle. Older adults with insulin resistance can prevent/delay type 2 diabetes by eating more whole-grain foods, fruits and vegetables, and becoming more physically active. For people who have already faced a heart attack, change in lifestyle can reduce the risks of another heart attack
Exercise and a healthy lifestyle also reverses the accumulation of cholesterol-laden plaque in the arteries.

Advice: Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity on most days of the week. Create a calming space, dedicating enough time for sleep and practicing relaxation techniques.

4. Myth: It’s natural for seniors to lose their appetite.

Fact: It’s true that seniors need less food due to metabolic changes but a sudden loss in appetite is a sign of concern. Decreased sense of taste or dental problems can cause seniors to eat less though their appetite hasn’t decreased.

Advice: Seniors should weigh themselves (or be weighed by their caregivers) periodically to look for changes. Any sudden weight loss should be seen as a red flag and warrants a visit to the doctor.

5. Myth: Seniors can eat as much fat, salt, and sugar as they like if they aren’t overweight.

Fact: People who are a healthy weight can still develop conditions like diabetes and heart disease from eating too many high-fat and sugar foods. Even seniors who are attempting to gain weight should eat a balanced diet rather than fill themselves with foods that are high in fat, salt, and sugar or low in nutrients.

Advice: Maintain a diet high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, olive oil, and fish, and low in meat, sugar and processed foods. This will help the cells to function better.

Freezing of Gait? Causes and 4 Effective Tips to Manage it

The secret for success? “Break the target/problem into smaller parts”. This has been used by cricketers such as MS Dhoni, eminent business and even great mathematicians. The fact of the matter is that when we run a complex program even on a computer, the CPU takes time to process it. It is the same with cricketers, with businessmen and great scientists. Rather than work on the entire programme and risk freezing, a step-by-step process is often easier on our minds (or processors) and on time too.

Let us take an example. Imagine that you click on the mouse or touchpad to scroll down to read this page (That is the input). Now ordinarily the CPU process this information and sends a message to the screen (the output device). The result is that you get to read the next line or paragraph. If there is a delay in the CPU processing this information for whatever reason – the screen freezes and you need to wait until the screen moves. The exact same thing happens to a Parkinson’s patient. For a Parkinson’s Disease patient, due to lack of signals from the brain, the patient does not get a cue on what to do – and hence he or she freezes.

freezing of gait, parkinson's disease

Depending on which part of the stride they are in and the social context – it can result in embarrassment to a fall. Fortunately, there has been a lot of scientific work behind this (Paula J. McCandless, 2015) , and there are a few ways by which this can be greatly reduced

  1. Do NOT fight the freeze – rather focus on other types of motion such as rotating your hands – this helps to make the freeze pass
  2. Physiotherapy specializing in Parkinson’s Disease can help with exercises which help to manage freezing episodes.
  3. While the response to the limbs may be frozen, a light cue helps. A laser light creates a line, which signals the individual to cross over. Thus, if the laser light moves along with the user, it acts as a guide. The user can overcome the freeze by following steps as guided by the light
  4. An audio cue, which can be in the form of a metronome or music with beats is another avenue for managing the freeze. The signal to the ears direct the user to walk at a particular speed, thus acting as a guide.

Coming back to the example above, there is a less likely chance of the computer/mobile freezing or slowing if all other applications are closed and focused on this one task at hand. For Parkinson’s patients who experience FOG (Freezing of gait), it is the same. It is about channeling all sources of input (eyes, ears, etc.) to that one task at hand.

Fortunately, there is a walker in India that helps us do just that: The U Step II Walker. Gifting a loved one who is suffering from Parkinson’s Disease or gait freezing the freedom to walk is probably the most cherished experience that they would get.

What is Parkinson’s Disease? 10 Early Signs of Identifying at Home and How to Tackle it

Our brain controls body functions and movements by sending our body parts a message. The messenger is the nerves, and they carry chemicals called neurotransmitters. One such neurotransmitter which is responsible for controlling speed and

planning of movements is called dopamine, which is produced in our brain stem. When there is a 70-80% reduction in production of dopamine, the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease begin.

Some facts

  • Though Parkinson’s is not hereditary per se, but if someone in your family had it, you have a 10-15% higher chance of contracting it.
  • Though it can affect you at any age, generally people above the age of 60 are affected.
  • It is NOT life-threatening, however there is no cure for it yet.
  • Affects men more than women
  • In India, about 60 Lakh people are affected by this currently, with the Parsi community highest at risk
  • Exposure to Pesticides increases the chance of contracting Parkinson’s Disease

How do we detect it at home?

Vivek* was in a soup. He had just become a father, Sunita*(his wife) and baby were still in hospital, when he received a call. “It’s a life and death

situation, we need you back at the office” his boss was already wanting him back, while Sunita was recovering from surgery. It was then that he felt a reassuring pat on the back. His mother told him, “Don’t worry son. We will take care of things here. You settle your stuff”. Sounds familiar?

After 3 days, Vivek was back in full swing at office, and after 3 months Sunita was. The reason they could do this was, when they were debating whether to start their family in a corporate setup, Vivek’s mother had told them to go for it, and she was there to support.

In an increasingly nuclear setup, apartment living and general mistrust of people amongst us, in times of emergencies, it is the grandparents who invariably step in and hold it all together. It is a thought we are not used to – say grandparents, and you think of a wrinkled person, sitting on an arm chair. Many memes have been made on this topic too. But the more one thinks about it, the more sense it makes.

  1. Companionship – Grandparents generally crave for companionship, and taking care of infants brings out the child in them. The twinkle in the eye is back, and for a few moments all the pain joints are gone. They have obviously been successful in raising their children and have experience in it.
  2. Experience – One of the hardest things to market in India is baby products, because a parent looks to their parents for recommendations. So, if the grandmother was using a brand for her baby, chances are the grandchild uses it too. In an increasingly nuclear setup, the moment parents want a bit of freedom from their baby, the grandparents are remembered. Grandparents crave for that opportunity.
  3. Trust – With Crime Patrol going overboard in reporting the horrors committed by domestic helps, parents need a trusted somebody to take of kids in their absence. Usually grandparents are the only ones to rise up to the challenge
  4. Expense Management – Hiring a trustworthy nanny costs a bomb, so parents generally look for the granny who also bring unconditional love along with them.

Here’s saluting the unsung heroes in our homes who make sure to be the perfect support cast, while we get along with our lives!
